Do You Need Drain Cleaning, or Is Drain Clearing Enough?

A slow-draining pipe in October is easy to ignore. By January, however, with the ground frozen and pipes under more stress, that same drain can become a serious problem. Here’s how to know if your drain needs more than a quick fix.

When Drain Clearing Is Enough

If this is the first time this particular drain has given you trouble, only one fixture is affected, and there’s an obvious one-time cause, a dropped object, a big holiday dinner, too much toilet paper, clearing really is enough. The rest of your plumbing is working normally, and there’s no need to pay for more than what the problem calls for.

When You Need Full Drain Cleaning

If the drain clears and then slows again within a week or two, the clog was never really the problem; the buildup underneath it was. The same goes if more than one drain is slow or backed up at once, if you hear gurgling from the toilet when you run the sink or shower, or if it’s been years since a professional touched your pipes at all.

Why Connecticut Homes Cross That Line Sooner

A lot of homes here were built before 1975, and many still have their original cast iron drain lines. Cast iron corrodes and roughens on the inside over decades, which gives debris something to grab onto that a smooth newer pipe wouldn’t.

Mature trees are common in the same older neighborhoods. Roots looking for moisture work their way into old pipe joints, and once they’re in, a quick clearing won’t get them out.

Don’t Let a Marginal Drain Go Into Winter

Fall is the right time to deal with a drain that’s just a little slow, not the middle of January. Connecticut winters freeze the ground, and a partial blockage that was manageable in October can turn into a full backup once the pipes are under that kind of stress.

If a drain has been borderline all season, get it looked at before the first hard freeze; not after.

Not Sure Where You Stand? We’ll Make the Call

If you’re not sure whether your drain needs clearing or a full cleaning, that’s a normal question, not a hard one. Call The Bee sends licensed, EPA-certified techs across Connecticut with upfront pricing before any work starts.

We answer calls 24/7 and offer emergency drain service if it can’t wait. If your home fits the older-CT-housing pattern above, our Beehive Membership includes priority scheduling and savings on the kind of routine drain maintenance that keeps you from finding out the hard way, mid-winter, that clearing wasn’t enough.
